Summer 2007 is WHEW

I love this summer! I'm so busy and I've gotten to know and hang out with a lot of people that I normally don't go hang out with. I'm a junior now so I have a lot more responsibility resting on me this year to get some scholarships ready for the good ol' college years.

The college board is very helpful with a year planner, reading list, and SAT practice! 30 minutes a day right? You must must get this book if you will do those 30 minutes. I got it from a Princeton Review class for free but that's me. :)

My schedule really looks pretty good right now. I'm trying to keep afloat in Calculus and still be the co-chair for my Activist Youth Club all the while running, SAT, and saxophone practice everyday. If I don't do them now in the summer consistently, then I will get rusty and will regret it when I need it for the real SAT, pep band and volleyball tryouts this year will be gosh awful if I don't keep conditioned.

This summer for me means keeping fresh and resist the temptation of the couch and getting stale not only in my mind but body and social life!

Yearbooks Are Out @ HOOVER!

I GOTZ Mine! It's high school, come on, you have to remember these times. They are technically the most important years of your life, these years shape your future. No pressure right? But yeah people who got the yearbook should know I am in there about 7 times. Thank goodness for extra-curricular activities.

Having a yearbook shows you care about yourself. Truly care about yourself, it's not selfish. It's good that you are and have become aware of your life and how you've changed, as a person, over the years. It always fun to see how your friends have changed as well, and the goofy pictures.

Getting people to sign your yearbook and leave the phone numbers so you can actually talk is key. KIT means keep in touch for those who my know, I went through a year pronouncing "kit" as many ways as possible trying to decipher its meaning. :) They left their phone numbers because they did want you to call them.

Plan to hang out over the summer, why sit in your bedroom have random convo's on Myspace? Talk to real people! these days people are so timid and indirect, what wrong with being out-going? These are the most life-shaping years of your life. Never have regrets! You'll be thinking about for the rest of your life.

So go out do something! Ask someone out, sign a yearbook with a long letter about how you met the person and how you'll miss them, but come back to read my blog. :)

Many of my friends have no idea and are not even aware that I am a complete fashionista at heart. America's Next Top Model and Ugly Betty are shows that I'll move my schedule around to watch. Curse me for not buying a Tivo yet.

I love to watch young females empower themselves through fashion. The industry has introduced standards that have made it healthier to be a model. Such as nutritious backstage snacks and larger body mass requirements have helped a lot of young girls' dreams come true and kept their lives from turning into nightmares.

Personal Style is fun to watch develop and grow for a person. That is why I'm starting a segment called Fashion That. I will feature some show updates for Project Runway, America's Next Top Model, Ugly Betty, and other fashion-filled shows. I'll also introduce some of my friends on Myspace with great personal style.

How to Self-Publish a Magazine - I've always loved how-to's. Sometimes I'd just read them to read them because when are you really going to learn how to "How to Calculate Pi by Throwing Frozen Hot Dogs". I read them from time to time because they're on my google homepage. This one about Self-Publishing was very descriptive and helpful and now if I ever want to publish a magazine, I have a guide.

The Daily Growl - Music in England is SCHMEX {XD , I say. I've been listening to it a lot lately, mainstream: Artic Monkeys, Lily Allen, but who stays mainstream for long? I found the site and they give you SAMPLE Mp3s. Then to check out the artist on itunes or their personal websites.

Sunday Breakfast Club - The St. Thomas Photo Guild gets together each Sunday for a photo shoot and breakfast. The author of the blog just did a shoot on some llamas. Llamas are uber cute in that very-ugly-animal sort of way.

Today's Update - This is my kind of news, slightly off beat but interesting because of it. The words flow and so do the statistics. Lately the News on television has cherry picked what they want to show on TV to show some prospects in a certian light. I'm waiting for some "uncensored" journalism. Forum Festival
Jes, the Band-Os went to the Happiest Place on Earth Yesterday Had a blast and whatnot. It was about the forum festival but we go to Disneyland as part of the Trip.

Some of the Wind Ensemble had a marathon going and played all three, er... groups.

The Whole Band Sha-Bam got a GOLD!! JEAH!

Wind Ensemble got Silver *single tear*
It all went to hell after some lame-o messed with Chris T's basoon reed. Out of count, coming in early, sometimes couldn't even get the notes. UGH!!

Orchestra got a Silver but w/e. That groups okay without us, the just needed a "full orchestra" for one song.

Everybody goes to change, some in front of others on the bus. Some behind friend-held T-shirts .. XD, or the small bathroom in the back.

Then on to DisneyLand

The Nev-ster gives us our tickets and I found out the importance of keeping your tickets at that place.

PHEONIX thank the lord that girl knows the place or we would have been wondering! She got us a locker to put loose stuff in, mapped out the day with fast passes and when we did actually waited in some line it was only like 20 minutes tops. LOVE HER.

We went out to get some jamba juice, good peach pleasure.

Rides
Indiana Jones - not that special, the rock took me by surprise though

Space Mountain - Rode 2x, v. cool ride, one with a whole group of 12 then + 2

Astro Blasters - 3500 pts!

Haunted Manshion - Good ride if you're a couple BAD if not.

Pirates of C. ride - I don't know what it was but there was some water at random time splashing us in the face.

Matterhorn - AN HOUR WAIT we actually got STUCK on the ride and they had to push us down; this was after the responsible Pahonix left us and we lost chris.

End it
Near the end of the we started meeting up with people and slitting up and then meeting up again; big groups of almost 20 then 2-3.

Didn't get to ride splash moutain though. Saw a little of the fantasmic show very cool made me feel like a kid again, I heard that Tink was OLD... Got a HAT, first lessons by Nancy *ahem* I don't think that that will happen again after I saw Myron or Byron or w/e. I was like er.. STOP.

Got on the tram to Mickey and Friend's Parking then to the bus. Fell asleep on lyndsey for two hours, then got a ride home {btw thanks kristen} Passed out as soon as my head hit the pillow.

Today
Sore, Tired and glad to be eating real food again. I'd thought I'd never say it but too much of a good thing can be bad.

So Yeah Thanks to all the Band-o's who let that day be very, very cool.

Take Control of Your Classes, Literally

Take control of your classes; don't let counselors boss you around and say what you can or cannot take. You CAN take whatever you want; it's your right as a student. They are just counselors, to counsel you. It is not in their job description to put limitations on your education.

It's not personal; you do have to take control of your academic endeavors. These counselors see an average of four to seven hundred students, just like you, in a school year. No matter what they can say, a times, you are just another school identification number to them.

You have to take the initiative to know what classes that are right for you and will lead towards a higher education. Higher education, not just in college but employers are looking for people with versatility in a variety of skill environments. If you do not take the utmost authority now, you will end up with a high school diploma that really accounts for nothing. And that's if you pass the Exit Exam (CAHSEE).

A-G Requirements + Community Service + Internship + CAHSEE = DIPLOMA

You, in high school, are required to have 44 A-G credits minimum to graduate. You CAN take up to 60 with the right scheduling, whether it is Block scheduling in the 4 by 4 or normal 6-7 periods in a day for the whole year. That's approximately, according to what school you go to, 20 plus credits that colleges can see you have accomplished. You CAN also take independent study or take some classes at a community college.

Schools in the inner city are chronically under funded, there aren't many guidance counselors that cater to your needs are as an individual anymore. You have to take the driver's seat in your education.

For example, do not seat through unnecessary Ceramics or Algebra 1 classes while required classes for any university are not being covered during the junior or sophomore semesters. That is bad scheduling and completely your fault for not expressing your needs for your classes. Counselors CANNOT under any circumstance dictate what you can or cannot take in a school year. If they try to say no, you will just have to bring your parent, because sometimes counselors won't take you seriously. The only thing they can say no to is if a class is actually full, so do not wait until it's too late, sign up early!

An example of correct scheduling and dominance of her academic life is Nicole Matisse; she was featured in Yahoo News, on the front page. Matisse took all eight of the advanced placement available, and also took eight other classes at a community college near her house. She amassed enough credits to enter the University of Michigan as a junior. When asked about among her teachers, they said she was a very determined young woman. They also said she took double the course load most people take in one semester.

That being said, again, it's not personal, govern your classes. I urge you to take advantage of what your school has to offer and compete in the 21 century global education arena because if we don't who will?

Get a Job, She Says

My mom has been hassling me for a job for a very long time. I have no problem with being employed, none at all. In fact, it's better than not having a job. So I applied to what I think are my favorite places to be at the mall: AMC (the movies) and Old Navy. I can pay for internet now!

Both application processes were fairly easy. If I qualify for either of them, it would be very hard to choose from. They are in Fashion Valley San Diego, in the mall I love. I can get to them even if I didn't have a car. The commute wouldn't get in my way.

In three to five days, both will get back to me with job details, or an interview. If there isn't a job opening they will keep my application on file. I like looking for jobs. It makes me feel like Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark but without the rock coming at me. I like looking for the right people for jobs to. Sometimes you can just tell who will get the job and who won't.

It actually has nothing to do with attractiveness. You have to have a calm demeanor but still have a lot of confidence. Don't talk too much but do let your opinions known. Always remember in service jobs, even if the customer is wrong the customer is always right.

Hoover is testing everybody! The people in 10th and 11th grade just tested. Class of 2009 was tested in English and World History. They read the directions for us, bring us snacks, make us focus even if we don't like it. That's their job and they've been doing it well.

If you haven't heard, we were the lowest tested rank in San Diego County, ALL grades, ALL students, several years ago. We caught up to Lincoln High, it was shut down and reconstructed. We caught to Gompers and that was shut down. We made our way to Crawford and San Diego and they were split into those 4-based schools. Mr. Williams says that if we are to get to Clairemont and Kearney, we need to do our best to succeed on this test. No messing around or bull. We need to focus.

The difference between a high school and a great high school is that the students take the initiative to have control of their future. The harder you work the luckier you'll get, then on to the harder you work the less you have to do. Being lazy especially on this test just makes your life harder. If we rank lower than our given point. Say good-bye to the Hoover we know and love. Besides the fact that there are a good portion of the advanced teachers leaving, do you really want to have our school shut down or put into the 4-based systems?

I'm sorry but I'd have to say that would flipping bite. It's a couple of hours on the last days of the week, just try your best and maybe Hoover will have a chance to show progress. We are the class of 2009 why not show that we are the best, and we can leave a legacy.

Festival is Coming! Festival is Coming!

Hoover's Advanced Band/Orchestra/Wind Ensemble is playing at Wagenheim Middle School manana @ 9. I play in all three as Clarinet 1 at our first music festival of the year.

Some of the wind ensemble is playing with the strings at festival to get the full orchestra effect. so we are playing this one song with them, The Barber of Seville. I did find both versions: Figaro, and The Overture. We are playing The Overture but Figaro is HAH-LAIR-EE-US. It makes me giggle. I don't know if it's because I'm in high school or it's because the opera sounds ... peculiar.

Lincoln is Rebuilt & Answers to Our Questions

These are some questions that I had and asked myself:

Should I go to Lincoln?
What happens if everyone goes, where does that leave Hoover?
Will there be more opportunities at Lincoln?

I have been agonizing over them in the past couple days, like the teachers have done for several months at Hoover. So I decided to educate myself on the matter.

Lincoln High School had its first ground-breaking in the 1950's and was named for the 16th president of our country, Mr. Abraham Lincoln. As the school went on, it had become filled to the rim with students, and every classroom was feeling the pressure of over-crowding. Lincoln also had the usual inner-city school struggles besides that; the administration had to deal with not having enough books per student, and violence. Lincoln being the center of South East San Diego, there were fights and general feeling of danger around the area. Due to that it was reconstructed, and built as

".... a hallmark project of Proposition MM, the $1.51 billion bond measure
passed by San Diego voters in 1998 [...] that funds modernization of 161
existing schools and construction of 12 new and three rebuilt schools to support
student achievement."

The Re-Opening is happening in September 2007, it has been proclaimed to be one of the most technologically advanced high schools in the state if not the country. With a whopping of 24.4 acres & four schools to choose from there will not be any overcrowding here.

Now about Hoover... What happens now? As everyone goes and the list including some of the best teachers and adminstrators such as Ms. Nevin, Ms. Frankenberg, Ms. Hobsen, Ms. Bayless, and even our very own Mr. Williams is leaving. It makes me sad to think what would Hoover be without these wonderful people to help us through high school. I myself am considering leaving for Lincoln. Who would be Ms. Frankenberg T.A. and who would be Ms. Nevin's First Chair? I wouldn't be as much of a music lover if it wasn't for Ms. Nevin. I still need to ponder about this for a while...

How I Will Never Give Up!

Okay we all knew this was coming, someone had to lose this right? Guess who got to learn this fabulous lesson on "you don't always get whatever you want"? That right, yours truly, your friendly blog writer, Asha.

It's okay though, I can't lie and say it doesn't hurt or anything because it does. I just have to show what the class is missing by not electing me. I'm still going through with my plans for the Class of 2009. I will be very involved in C/O 2009 ASB; we will not slack off like this year, I will make sure of it.

I still love the class of 2009. I still don't think anyone could have as much spirit as us, and no amount of points could measure. I still will write this blog. It's going to be alright.

HEY! You [insert label]!

All in all I am firmly against judging people, I'd like to say it would be better if we all were measured by strength of character and whatnot, but the world isn't that way. Kind of sucks, really.

I am in Advanced Band, I guess I would be classified as a Band Geek. When I think of Band Geeks, I think Uber Smart, Funny, and Cool. I don't know about anyone else but I think that Band is one of the most productive and successful organizations at Hoover. We have an average of 5-6 members get into All City Honor Band. That's huge for a band!

Last Year, I was the only freshman in PEP Band, one of 2 clarinets. There were only 18 or 19 of us but we were loud and could get louder than any other 35 piece PEP Bands. Every game if the other team actually brought a band, they would get schooled in some old fashion cross court band battles. The conductor would have to come worship at Ms. Nevin's feet and gush about how good we were. We didn't practice together, but we were still very skilled and had confidence in what we were doing and the team we were playing for. HOO-RYDE!

Currently, I am First Chair Clarinet. The First Chairs last year were all seniors, and when they graduated I was bumped up. I'm only a sophomore, so I had to step up my game in the technical aspects of playing Clarinet. I still have to continue to work on counting and sight reading, but I'd probably say I'm freaking good at Clarinet. Next year, I hopefully look forward to playing my Sax in PEP Band.

There's a festival we are playing next Saturday at about 10 O'clock am and the Wind Ensemble (top 2-3 players per section), Whole Band, and Orchestra (Strings, a more sweet type of music) are performing at Wagenheim Middle School in Mira Mesa. It's free for the audience, we're paying money to be judged on our musicianship. I hope we get a gold or rank one or something; I've been practicing really hard.

I took me a couple of weeks to learn the basics of HTML and build this site. I have read up on the best blogger sites like John Chow, ProBlogger, and Copyblogger and soaked up as much knowledge as I could. What I bring to you is this site. I hope it is to your liking if not, please email or comment your concerns.

I am now introducing a new segment into the site, it called Some Serious Linkage. They are links to what I think are the most useful sites on the web. this is just my opinion, but I do love me some useful sites. Some Serious Linkage will be posted biweekly and I hope they're a big hit. So without further ado:

This time I'm opting for some shameless Self-Promotion for the Sister Sites (sites that I also just so happen to author as well as Presidency2009). I love having my hands in so many fields on the web! These sites are about things that have peaked my interest, but no one really elaborated about them on their sites, or there were no websites about them. The Sister Sites are also featured on my right sidebar. Here goes:

Wealthy Teen is about becoming more wealthy as a teen and usually has ways to become rich with a teenage attention span.

Malling Teen is about reviews and happenings at the happiest place on earth: THE MALL! Cool Outfits and product Reviews on this will be featured everday, hopefully with this site I can have manufacturers send me new products, so my mailbox will be the happiest place on earth.

C-Note Central is about having $100 and ways to spend it. Some online, some off and sometimes just doing somethings with your friends.

Practicing PenPal is about having a PenPal and what to talk about or how to keep them interested. It's just me trying to bring snail mail back.

Teen Review is about review material objects as a teen. My goal with this site is to have manufacturers send me their newest items to keep and REVIEW!

Promptly in High School has more of an academic feel. My goal with this site is to able to right about 1000 words in half of an hour. For college and the SAT practice, I will go through prompts and type for 30 minutes straight, and see my word number grow.

Swish-Swank is a spin on personal shopper sites but sticking to a vintage more sophisticated feel, think Voguish not bogess.

I hope you love all of these sites and visit them as often as you visit this one.

Healthy Lunchables for Ms. Vig

As many you of know or should know, Ms. Vigil is our beloved Class Advisor. It's pronounced Vi-HEEL because it's Spanish and the G said like an H. We call her Ms. Vig (like Vij). She has a good sense of humor and work ethic to match. The thing about Ms. Vig is: She's HEALTHY. I mean very healthy. She bikes, runs, and just started to swim. We'd like to see her in Hawaii doing the Iron Man.

Ms. Vig also brings healthy lunches to school. She usually cooks her food and packs it. When she's not feeling up to that everyday, she makes healthy lunchables.

The one she has invented so far is made out of:

Triscuits,Turkey Slices, Philly Cheese Spread, a Sprig of Cilantro

She stacks them on top of the triscuit, with the sprig right on top, artfully skewed of course.

When It Rains On Your Parade

Rejections tend to impact us more than our successes. As people, we remember our cringe inducing experiences more than that time we got an award for academics or athletics. Is it because feeling rejected hurts more than how earning something feels good?

Whatever it is, SHAPE Magazine says we would be much happier people if we didn't stress about being rejected so much. It makes us forgetful because it uses so much brain space we could using for other things.

Take me for example, I ran for Class of 2009 president. If I lose, I of course will be sad for a while because it's hard to deal with when the C/O 2009 literally rejected you, but you can't dwell, you know. If you dwell, it'll eat you up inside. I mean you are still alive it's really not that big of a deal. People want to see that you are doing well, you can't lie to yourself and even tell them "Everything's fine". EVERYTHING is not fine! You must be mentally healthy as well as physically healthy. So don't worry, be happy.

I hope as president I can keep a smile on your C/O 2009 faces. It'd be my personal goal to cheer you up if there's something going on in your life. Email me if you need an ear to listen or shoulder to cry on. I mean it, you can trust me, nothing that you write will every be seen on the site (unless you want it to), and I promise to give the soundest advice humanly possible. I'll start right now: What doesn't kill you, make you stronger. See? :)

Stop Procratinating to Do What You Want

What could go wrong?

Like the song goes, but you can't do what you want if you have a stack of papers on your desk waiting to be figured out. This is first of many posts to help C/O 2009 grow and succeed in all endeavors. The first issue I will address is procrastination. It is is a HUGE issue for us as teenagers. It has left failed grades, jobs, and unclaimed scholarships in its wake. There are many ways to remove this untamed beast from your life, you'll just have to find what's right for you.

Administrators at Hoover say and use the Sean Covey approach from {the 7 habits of highly effective teens} using 7 highly effective habits. There written on banners all over our school:

Habit 1: Be Proactive

Take responsibility for your life

Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind

Define your mission goals in life

Habit 3: Put First Things First

Prioritize, and do the most important things first

Habit 4: Think Win-Win

Have an everyone-can-win attitude

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand then to be Understood

Listen to people sincerely

Habit 6: Synergize

Work together to achieve more

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw

Renew yourself regularly

Those are fine and dandy, if you want to read the accompany book and then want to remember all of that every time you get to a task. I'm sorry I'm just not built that way, you know. Procrastination is just an example of poor time management anyway.

What I do is write anything that is coming up if it is fairly important to me. Writing it down makes it official, it's like I'm telling my brain "I will do this". I made it a habit to actually do the stuff I wrote down, and I did not write anything that not important, or... urgent.

Whoa, I just had a Cardinals Interact flashback. That reminds me, they gave me a folder with laminated sides to use again and again. They also gave me a wet erase marker, but I digress.

You do still need be able to have fun, we are teenagers after all. So go to the beach with you friends, your cousin's quince, or just hang out. You still need time to unravel and talk about nothing; just in moderation.

Procrastination is something that we face everyday, we as teens must make the choice to travel the long slippery road to a life of unkept promises and appointments but have to face the consequences as well.

If you do even 20% of your list, it's enough to give your brain a feeling of accomplishment and the psychological boost to finish the rest. Keep yourself happy and anxiety free, so finish what you start and only start what you sincerely mean to finish.

A is for assertive

You have to have a leader that knows what the class needs and how to get it; a leader ready to speak on your behalf, ready to take on the other Classes. Part of being assertive actually is being a person that can relate to others, ready to fully persuade and speak to other as an advocate for the Class of 2009.

S is for successful

I consider myself very involved at Hoover. I’m in National Honor Society with a 4.0, in Advanced Band as First chair Clarinet (I can also play the saxophone),and I’m in Cardinals Interact. I practically take Junior’s classes right now and I also am a Teacher’s assistant to Ms. Frankenberg’s AP US History class. I stay on top of my classes. I’ve been an active ASB member. I also participate in the Princeton Review SAT Prep Class. I took all of these things on, some say it’s too much or you don’t have a social life, but I stand as proof that this can be done.

H is for honest

I’d like to be honest with you, I believe I’m someone you can trust. I truly have the best interest for the Class of 2009 at heart and so far the people in leadership positions for past couple of years have not fully proven their worth. I do understand the issues and priorities we have a Class and want to do something about it.

A is for AWESOME!

I’m “Cool girl” in band. I have a cool sense of humor. I love putting smiles on people’s faces. I promise I’ll do my best to as your Class of 2009 president.

I am and believe to be the best qualified for the Presidency. I promote active participation, I’d like to take the lead. I’m creative and can contribute immensely to our cause.
